SAPREF is a joint venture between Shell SA Refining and BP Southern Africa. We are the largest crude oil refinery in Southern Africa with 35% of South Africa’s refining capacity. We are located in the city of Durban, on the east coast of South Africa.

Community Engagements

We believe in proactive, open and transparent engagement with the community. Our continued focus on good environmental performance has resulted in much improved relations with neighbours. We have identified nine communities in our immediate area and we have committed to ongoing dialogue with these communities. They are Merebank, Wentworth, Umlazi, Bluff, Isipingo, Lamontville, Austerville, Fynnland and Athlone Park.

We have a Community Liaison Forum (CLF) that has been in existence for six years. It is mainly made up of NGOs and it sits monthly with refinery management to debate issues, to get feedback from the refinery and to plan initiatives that help to improve SAPREF’s environmental and social performance. We also participate in a similar forum for Island View.

In addition to the CLF, we engage with the community through refinery visits, meetings, our annual Sustainability Report, Columns magazine, flyers, brochures and through media reports.

About SAPREF

We process 24 000 tons crude per day and we make 10 main products in 46 different grades. We produce 2.7 billion litres of petrol per year, which is enough fuel to take 800 000 cars around the world. We have 160 000 km of pipe work (4 times around the world). We operate at temperatures of up to 700ºC and at pressures up to 120 bar. We have about 700 employees, 500 contractors and 208 learners at our refinery.
